Unfortunately only one of my collaborators is local enough to make regular co-writing sessions feasible, so a lot of emails have been flying back and forth. This is more of a drag, and often involves writing mini-essays on the pros and cons of the various options. We came to write songs, not essays, and it's a frustrating contrast to working in a room together, singing and playing ideas and getting instant feedback from each other on whether something's right or not.
It's also an opportunity for genre-hopping: I've been working on four songs, which might loosely be described as soul-searching rock/pop, an open-hearted ballad, an acidic rocker and finally some straight-ahead boy/girl pop. By the time I write my next post, I hope that at least one of these will have been declared “done”, demoed and presented for your delight. Stay tuned.
